Breaux Bridge

"Known originally as Pont Breaux, Breaux Bridge was founded by acadian pioneer Firmin Breaux, who in 1799 built a footbridge aross the Bayou Teche at the towns present-day site. By 1816 the bridge was widened to permit the passage of a wagon or cart, but the town itself did not spring up until 1829, when Firmin's widowed daughter-in-law, Scholastique, sold off her land in lots to settlers. Breaux Bridge bills itself as "La Capitale Mondiale des Escrivisses" (Crawfish Capitol of the World). "
